Hotel Stavanger

Are you looking for a place to relax and experience some of Norway's history? Visit Sola Strand Hotel in Stavanger and be awed by the beautiful surroundings.

The history of Sola Strand Hotel

Sola Strand Hotel in Stavanger has a long and exciting history. The premises first opened its doors in 1914, run by Rasmus Christoffersen – a restaurateur from Stavanger.

Initially the hotel was an eatery for visiting residents from Stavanger. Unfortunately the business was slow so Christoffersen sold the restaurant to the couple Ellen and Axel Lund in 1927. They restored every part of the building and in 1928 it reopened under the name Sola Strandhytte.

The hotel upgraded with new dining room Sverresalen, a venue our guests can still enjoy today. Our hotel in Stavanger has been restored several times throughout the years with great efforts to maintain and preserve the historic charm.

Historical and unique venues

At Sola Strand Hotel you find some of Norway’s most unique venues for celebrations and parties. We have six different rooms that you can rent for a special occasion.

Sverresalen

Materials salvaged from the old frigate Kong Sverre are built into this dining hall. The ship was built in 1860, and at that time it was the biggest sailing warship in Norway. The beautiful wooden floor in Sverresalen also has its origins from that ship. Sverresalen has room for 120 guests and is frequently used for weddings and other celebrations.

Den Glade Laks

This venue is more fitting for more secluded events and private parties. This hall accommodates a party of 50. Den Glade Laks has a charming interior with old farmhouse furniture. It was originally used as the hotel’s á la carte restaurant. The name translates to “The Happy Salmon” and stems from a 27 kilo salmon caught by hotel owner Axel Lund in 1946.

Solasalen

Solasalen was built in 1914 and is now used as the hotel’s á la carte restaurant. The walls in the dining room are decorated with prints of exquisite watercolor paintings. The originals were painted 120 years ago by shipowner Mons Gabriel Monsen from Tananger and are currently exhibited at Museum Stavanger. Downstairs from Solasalen you’ll find Nye Solasalen with large windows overlooking the beautiful white beaches outside.

Montroyalsalen

Montroyalsalen is built with materials from the ship Montroyal, which belonged to the Canadian Pacific Line in 1906. The ship had room for 1540 passengers and a total crew of 370 people. The fireplace, lead glass ceiling and the windows in Montroyalsalen are the exact same ones onboard the ship in the 1900s. Today, this venue is mainly used for dancing, closed events, and our Sunday buffet.

Rygekongen

Rygekongen is a modern banquet hall and part of our newest building, Erling Skjalssonsenteret. The banquet hall was built in 2012 and is named after political leader Erling Skjalgsson, who is said to have lived at a farm near Sola Ruin Church.

Ellens utsikt

This beautiful banquet hall has capacity for 80 guests and is perfect for meetings, conferences, and special occasions like weddings. The venue has big windows that illuminate with daylight and provides an unforgettable view of Solastranden and the North Sea. A magical backdrop as the bride walks up to the altar.

Solastranden

Solastranden is an experience in itself, and when you stay at our beach hotel the shoreline is just a few steps away. This beach was rated as one of the world’s most beautiful beaches by the UK newspaper The Sunday Times, and it's not hard to understand why. Solastranden is 2,3 kilometers long, and it's very popular among surfers and those wanting to spend some time by the calming waves.

Art and museums

Stavanger has a wide range of eclectic museums. For those who are interested in planes, we recommend the Sola Aviation Museum. Here you can peruse an impressive collection of restored planes.

Stavanger is known as the oil capital of Norway, and to become more familiar with the city’s history, you should visit the Norwegian Petroleum Museum. This is one of the most visited museums in Stavanger, where you can learn about how oil and gas were made millions of years ago.

Another famous museum is the Norwegian Canning Museum. Here you will see how the production of canning was done years ago, and get insight into what it was like to work at such a factory back in the days.

Shopping and city life

If you’re interested in shopping, or would just like to take a walk down small and charming streets, you should stroll through Stavanger City – and especially the old part of town. Sola Strand Hotel is located only 15 kilometers from downtown Stavanger.
